Barbara's Way Projects - How to Hang a Single Shelf

Overview:

This project will show you how to hang a single shelf. Never underestimate the power of a single shelf for creating storage. It's a simple solution to managing your space.

Tools You'll Need:

4-in-1 level, 10ft. or 25ft. tape measure, power-lite cordless drill or 6-in-1 interchangeable screwdriver, 7oz. hammer

Before You Begin:

Measure the shelf and decide how many braces you will need. Braces should be placed 20-32 inches apart. A 36-inch board makes a good, basic shelf and should only require two braces.

Barbara's Tips:

Most wall studs are 16 inches apart. If you don't have a stud finder, tap the wall with your knuckles and listen for a deep, hard tone.

  Step 1: A Level Start
Use your level to be sure your shelf will be straight. Measure up from the floor to the height of the shelf and using the level, draw a straight guideline on your wall.

Step 2: Brace Yourself
Locate and mark the studs in the wall along your guideline. Hold the board up to the wall and determine the overhang. Mark the shelf to show where the two braces will be placed. Remember, wall studs are usually 16 inches apart. Mark the screw holes with your pencil and then use the drill to make shallow pilot holes. Now attach the brace to the wall with the screws. Attach the other brace to the shelf at the marked line, making sure the back edge of the brace is flush to the back of edge of the shelf.

Step 3: Secure the Shelf
Place the shelf on the first brace you secured to the wall. Level and align the shelf and secure the second brace to the wall with screws. Finally, secure the first brace to the shelf. You're finished! A simple storage solution in minutes. And you did it yourself!
