Barbara's Way Projects - How to Install Track Lighting

Overview:

This project will show you how to install track lighting. Track lighting gives you flexible, moveable fixtures that can be repositioned along a powered overhead trackway, so you can adjust your lighting to accommodate changes in room layout or lighting needs.

Materials:

track lighting kit, electrical tape, masking tape, drywall anchors, screws

Tools You'll Need:

6-in-1 interchangeable screwdriver, 10ft. or 25ft. tape measure

Before You Begin:

What areas of the room do you want to spotlight? How much lighting do you need? There are an almost infinite variety of track lighting fixtures, all with different types of connectors and fittings for you to choose from. Design considerations aside, you'll also need to make sure your new lighting will not overload any existing circuits, and that no permits are required for you to do the work. There are two basic kinds of track lighting systems. The first comes with a cord that simply plugs into any existing outlet, the second type uses an existing junction box (in this case, the ceiling receptacle your current light fixture runs off) and requires you to make a few electrical connections on your own. If there's no junction box available, you'll need to have a professional electrician install one.

Barbara's Tips:

Keep track of wiring connections by using masking tape and a pencil to mark the wires themselves.

  Step 1: Plan Your Layout
Using the junction box (or outlet) as your starting point, mark off the planned track layout on the ceiling. Follow the "measure twice" rule here as well, taking care that tracks run parallel to walls and don't come within a half foot of your curtains or any other flammable materials. Once you've got your layout, assemble all tracks and fixtures.

Step 2: Break the Connection
If you've chosen a system that runs off a junction box, your next to step is to hook up the new fixture. As with all electrical work, you start by locating the breaker in your box that supplies power to the room you're working in, and flipping it off. Check to make sure you've shut down the right one! After that, lock out the panel box, so that no one accidentally switches it back on while you're working.

Step 3: Off With the Old
Next you'll need to physically remove your old fixture. Start by removing the bulbs, then unscrewing the fixture to expose the wiring. Your new lighting will be wired exactly the same way - most often, you'll simply be connecting white wires to white wires, and black ones to black ones. If the connections are more complex, take notes on how the current fixture is wired up before disconnecting it. Now disconnect the old fixture entirely and remove it.

Step 4: Make the Connection
Now you'll wire in your new lighting system. You'll do this by either twisting the appropriately colored wires together with plastic connectors, or by screwing them directly onto terminals. Tuck these wires neatly back into the junction box when you're finished. Now install the new fixture's mounting plate onto the junction box, and fasten securely.

Step 5: Lay Some Track
Start by snapping track into place on the mounting plate, and align with your layout marks. Tighten in place. Position your next piece of track, and secure with either screws (if you can access a ceiling joist) or toggle bolts. Hang the entire track layout before tightening (note: some types of systems will require additional electrical connections to be made: consult manufacturers directions).

Step 6: Shine a Light
Now position the light fixtures themselves. Insert them into the track grooves where desired, rotate 1/4 turn to tighten. Install bulbs, flip the power back on, and enjoy your brand-new room. You did it yourself!
