Overview:
This project will show you how to install a pet door. Tired of waking up in the middle of the night to let the dog out, or the cat back in? Install a pet door and let your four-legged friends set their own schedules.
Materials: pet door, pencil, caulk, masking or painters tape Tools You'll Need: 10ft. or 25ft. tape measure, Philips screwdriver, power-lite cordless drill with 1/2" and 3/8" drill bits, 6" or 8" slip joint pliers Before You Begin: Measuring is the most important part of this job. Measure your pets to make sure you purchase the right size door. Measure the outside door where you plan to install your pet door. Make sure you have enough space to make the opening width 2" wider than the widest part of your pet. The opening height should be 2" taller than the length from the top of the shoulders to the chest, just behind the front legs.
Barbara's Tips:
Caulk the inside of the outer frame of the pet door to prevent any air leaks and keep your house energy efficient.

Step 1: Plan your Layout
Most pet doors come with a template for placement. Place the template in the desired location on the door (at least 3" above the bottom edge of the door.) Tape it in place and use a pencil to trace the interior edge of the template. Mark any hardware placement. Step 2: Cut it Out
Mark an X at each of the four corners of your outline. Drill holes in the middle of the X marks, using a 1/2" drill bit and making sure the hole does not extend past the outline. Now's the time to drill screw holes to fasten the outer hardware to the door. Next, use a jig saw to cut the opening. Start in one corner, ing the blade in the corner hole and cut along the pencil line. Step 3: Install a Private Entrance
From the exterior of your door, the outer frame of the pet door into the opening. The frame should be flush with the interior door surface. From the interior, the inner frame with the flap into the opening. Hold the door in place and and tighten screws. Step 4: Show them the Door
Patiently teach your pet how to use their exclusive new entrance and exit. You may have to nudge your pet through the first few times, but they will quickly come to love their newfound freedom and you can will be free from doorman duty. You did it yourself!
