Overview:
This project will show you how to stain a deck. Staining your deck does more than just make it look good. It protects the wood from sun and water damage and helps restore natural oils.
Materials: bleach, deck cleaner, wood stain Before You Begin: You need a good weather day for this project. Avoid staining the deck in extreme (hot, cold, windy) weather. Wear old clothes and be sure to wear safety glasses especially when pressure washing and rubber gloves to prevent your skin from getting stained along with the deck.
Barbara's Tips:
An electric pressure washer can also be used for the heavy cleaning process. However, pressure washing can be hazardous. The force of the water can cause injury to people or animals. Be sure to follow all of the rental company's instructions when using this piece of equipment and make sure your work area is clear.

Step 1: Scrub A Dub Dub
Use warm water, bleach and long handled bristle scrub brush to scrub and clean the mildew and real dirty areas off the deck.Use the deck cleaner to thoroughly clean the deck, then let the deck dry completely. Step 2: Create a Masterpiece
Using the large brush or long-handled roller, dip into the stain and apply a few strokes. Work quickly to roll or brush the stain onto the deck. Apply the stain lightly and evenly and try not to overlap the edges. Use the smaller paintbrush for hard to reach places, like deck railings and corners. Step 3: Appreciate Art
Allow the stain to set for at least 24 hours before using your deck. After your stain has cured, grab a cold drink and enjoy it on your newly painted deck. It looks great, and you did it yourself!
