How to Install a Window Air Conditioner Recommended Skill Level:

Overview:

This project will show you how to install a window air conditioner. Most window units are made to be installed in double hung windows. These are the type that the top and bottom sashes slide up and down.

Materials:

2" foam insulation or weather stripping, 1" wood screws

Tools You'll Need:

12ft. or 16ft. tape measure, 4.8v rechargeable cordless screwdriver and retractable utility knife

Before You Begin:

Know the width of the window to verify size of width of air conditioner.

Barbara's Tips:

Try to purchase a unit that runs off of conventional wall outlets to minimize cost of hiring an electrician to install new power outlet.

  Step 1: Note
Please be sure to follow manufacturer's installation instructions.

Step 2: Lift and Center
Open the bottom window and lift the a/c onto the window sill until the top flange of the a/c align with the window sash and close the window until it sits on top of the a/c and behind the flange. The a/c now must be centered in your window.

Step 3: Extend Sides
Pull out the side panels on the a/c and extend to the side window frames and secure as required.

Step 4: Install Screws
Using your power screwdriver, install screws through the holes in the top a/c flange and secure to the window.

Step 5: Install Insulation
Install the foam insulation where the top and or bottom of sashes are to block out any outside air infiltration.

Step 6: Cool Off
You are now ready to plug in and cool off.

Step 7: Care for your A/C
Cover the unit from the outside in the winter with a canvas cover to block out the cold air and protect your unit. Change the air filter every 4 weeks during the cooling season.
