Overview:
This project will show you how to install sliding closet doors. New closet doors are a quick and easy way to give a tired room a fresh new look.
Materials: Sliding doors that have the same measurements as doors you are replacing, track hardware and screws (usually included with the doors) Tools You'll Need: power-lite cordless drill, 6-in-1 interchangeable screwdriver, 10ft. or 25ft. tape measure Before You Begin: If you're dealing with uneven floors or a very wide doorway, look for sliding doors have their wheels on the track that is attached to the floor and use the upper track as a guide only. Otherwise, simply measure your old doors and take the measurements with you to a lumberyard or home improvement center.
Barbara's Tips:
When installing the bottom track on carpeting, before you pre-drill the pilot holes for the screws, pull the carpet fibers back until you can see the carpet backing. Press the carpet down with a damp towel to avoid catching the fibers with your drill and causing a snag in your carpet.

Step 1: Choose Wisely
Consider the room in which you will be using the doors. Select a style that suits your decor. Decide whether you want finished or unfinished doors. If you choose unfinished, apply paint or stain before hanging the doors. Step 2: Out with the Old
Lift the old doors up and out of the track. Most ride in the overhead track, some have a small lever that you hold down to release them from the track, while others have cutouts along the track where the rollers can be lifted free. Put on your safety glasses, since you will be looking up while working on the hardware that is above your head. Use your electric drill or screwdriver to remove the screws holding the overhead track in place. You will not need to save any of the old hardware. Remove the bottom brackets. Step 3: On the Right Track
Measure the new track hardware against the old for length. Use your hacksaw to size the new track, if necessary. Install the upper track (it's helpful to have a friend hold it in position while you the screws). If you are using the old screw holes for the new track, go ahead and install the screws. If the new track has a different placement, use your drill, or a hammer and nail, to position pilot holes to guide the new screws in. Be sure the screws are well seated, so the heads don't interfere with the movement of the door, but don't over-tighten them, as this can warp the track. Step 4: Slip Sliding Away
Place the bottom track on the floor and hang first the back, then the front sliding door. Let the doors hang to find the center for the bottom track, then remove the doors. Mark the position of the lower track on the doorjamb, then mark each screw hole along the floor. Attach the lower track, and then re-hang the doors – again starting with the back door. Attach the doors to the lower track and slide them gently back and forth. Enjoy the silent glide of new closet doors. You installed them yourself!
