How to Replace a Doorknob Recommended Skill Level:

Overview:

This project will show you how to replace a doorknob. A broken doorknob is an inconvenience, but replacing it is not as difficult as you might think. Keeping the parts organized when taking the doorknob apart will make it easier to reassemble.

Materials:

new doorknob and appropriate hardware

Tools You'll Need:

6-in-1 interchangeable screwdriver, hex key set

Before You Begin:

Replacement doorknobs are available in all hardware stores and come with detailed installation instructions. If you are trying to replace a deadbolt, you will need more complete instructions and possibly a drill.

Barbara's Tips:

Know your hardware. As you take the first doorknob apart, keep the parts organized so you can remember how everything fits together when installing the new doorknob.

Step 1: Out With the Old
Remove the trim from the doorknob by gently prying off the plate or by removing the two screws that hold it on. Remove the two long screws under the trim. These are the long screws that hold the two sides of the doorknob together. Pull the doorknobs apart and remove them. Now remove the two screws holding the strike bolt (locking mechanism) and take out the strike bolt. You should have an empty hole.

Step 2: And In With the New
Insert the new strike bolt and screw it in place. The slanted side of the strike bolt should face in the direction the door opens. Place the trim piece between the door and the new doorknob, then the doorknob into the hole in the door. Make sure the doorknob fits the bolts locking mechanism. Insert the other piece of trim and doorknob on the opposite side of the door. Align the two doorknobs, the screws and tighten. Voila! A working door in no time at all. And you did it yourself!
