Barbara's Tips:
There are 3 parts to knowing your plumbing main water shut off valves, local water shut off valves and the waste system.

Step 1: Main Water Valves
Main water shut off valve is the first on/off valve on the incoming water system. It is usually located just after your water meter. You should label this valve and never block free access to the area. To check the valve turn it off and open all faucets and turn on showers. If it is holding properly water will not flow to open faucets. If there is water still coming out in a constant flow, contact your local plumber and have it replaced. This valve is to be shut off only in emergencies or if the local valves do not hold for home remodeling work. Open the valve once you have completed your test. Step 2: Local Water Valves
Local water shut off valves are located close to the faucet, shower or appliances they control. They can be located usually under a sink in a cabinet or behind appliances like your washing machine. These valves can be tested the same way you checked your main valve. If any of these valves do not hold, it is not imperative to replace them since you can always shut off the main valve. However, having your plumber replace them would never hurt. Step 3: Waste System
Your waste system is easy. Clogged drain pipes are usually your only problem. The drainage system usually gets clogged in two areas, your toilet bowl or your sink. A plunger will free your toilet and sink as will liquid drain cleaner from your local home center. Your home does have a main house trap that can sometimes get clogged. We recommend shutting off your water and calling a plumber to snake this line.
