How to Adjust a Wooden Door that Rubs Recommended Skill Level:

Overview:

This project will show you how to adjust a wooden door that rubs. No time to tackle a bigger project? Here's a quick fix that can make your door close properly and stop any damage to a painted finish.

Materials:

screws, nails

Tools You'll Need:

7oz. hammer, 6-in-1 interchangeable screwdriver

Barbara's Tips:

If you are planning on retouching the doorframe after you have adjusted the door, make sure to use a nail set to sink the nail below the surface of the wood. Fill in the shallow hole with wood putty for a completely smooth surface for your paint touch-up.

  Step 1: Check the Hinges
Check and tighten all hinge screws to determine where the door is rubbing (top, middle, bottom). If it is rubbing on top, loosen the top hinge screws about halfway (do not remove). If it is rubbing on the bottom, do this to the bottom hinge. Take a toothpick and slide it behind the hinge on the side towards the center of the doorjamb and tighten the screws.

Step 2: Check the Jamb
If the door is still rubbing after you've completed Step One, locate the area of damaged paint on the doorjamb. Take your hammer and a finish nail and nail into the wood between the doorstop and jamb edge until the nail is set. Your paint job is saved – and you did it yourself!
