How to Install a Carbon Monoxide Detector Recommended Skill Level:

Overview:

This project will show you how to install a carbon monoxide detector. If you use gas appliances or heat, or have an attached garage, carbon monoxide could be a silent, deadly threat. Keep your home and family safe by installing a UL certified detector, available at home and hardware stores.

Materials:

UL certified carbon monoxide detector (stand-alone or wireless are the easiest to install)

Tools You'll Need:

power-lite cordless drill, 6-in-1 interchangeable screwdriver

Before You Begin:

Choose good mounting locations. Detectors should be located near a gas furnace, near sleeping areas and in close proximity to an attached garage.

Barbara's Tips:

Carbon monoxide detectors use a chemical to detect and react to the presence of carbon monoxide. The chemical breaks down and needs to be replenished after a certain period of time.

  Step 1: A One-Step Project
Following manufacturer's instructions, use the drill and screws to mount the detectors to the ceilings or walls in each of your predetermined areas. Relax and breathe deeply. Your home is protected and you did it yourself!
