Before You Begin:

1. When a breaker has tripped, it lays in between the on/off sides of the breaker. 2. Air conditioners, refrigerators and stoves usually have there own breaker. 3. Multiple room outlets of lighting may be on one breaker. You would label breaker as bedroom outlets.

Barbara's Tips:

If you are going to be replacing a switch, outlets and light fixtures, you need to know how to shut off the power to that device.

  Step 1: Open the Panel
When you first open your panel door, notice that each breaker has a number next to it. On a piece of paper write the numbers the way you see them. When you are done with the following steps, write the designated rooms and what they do next to each number. When completed, tape the panel directly next to your panel.

Step 2: Start Flipping
Using a plug in radio with the volume set to high so you can hear when you are at the electric panel. Start flipping the breaker from on to off until the radio stops playing. Label that breaker (i.e. bedroom outlet, your kitchen outlet).

Step 3: Label It
Lighting is easier, turn on light fixtures, find the breaker that turns it off and label it accordingly.
