How to Repair a Small Hole in the Wall Recommended Skill Level:

Overview:

This project will show you how to repair a small hole in the wall. When moving furniture or rearranging artwork, you may come upon small holes in the wallboard. Don't panic. These small holes are easy to fix.

Materials:

joint compound

Tools You'll Need:

6-in-1 putty knife

Before You Begin:

Check the area around the hole. If there is a dark stain or powdery residue, the area has been damaged by water. Check for roof or plumbing leaks before repairing the hole.

Barbara's Tips:

A dark stain or powdery residue around a small hole in the wallboard is a sign of water damage. Check for roof or plumbing leaks before attempting any plaster repairs.

  Step 1: Prep the Area
Use the putty knife or sandpaper to remove any loose or rough plaster.

Step 2: Spackle a Crack
Use the putty knife and generously coat a small crack with joint compound. Let the spackle dry and apply one more layer. Use the sandpaper on the dry compound to smooth the surface before repainting.

Step 3: Fill a Hole
Use an adhesive repair patch that has a reinforced metal center. These can be bought at any hardware or home improvement store. Cut the patch to fit over the hole, and then use the putty knife to smooth joint compound over the patch and hole. Let it dry, then smooth with sandpaper and repeat until you have a flat surface.

Step 4: Touch It Up
Wipe off any plaster residue with a tack cloth and apply touch-up paint. Your wall will look as good as new. And you did it yourself!
