How to Retrieve Jewelry from a Sink Drain Recommended Skill Level:

Overview:

This project will show you how to retrieve jewelry from a sink drain. No need to call a plumber. Save time and money by retrieving your priceless items yourself.

Tools You'll Need:

8" slip joint pliers, 15-pc. lighted screwdriver with magnetic telescoping end

Before You Begin:

Do not run the water! Also, the screwdriver magnet will not work on precious metals, such as gold, silver or platinum. So if it's your engagement ring down at the bottom of the drain, go directly to Step Two.

Barbara's Tips:

When replacing nuts, twist them as tight as you can manually, then use a wrench to turn them a quarter revolution, so they are snug, not over-tightened.

  Step 1: The Easy Grab
Remove the drain stop in the sink and extend the magnet on the lighted screwdriver into the drain until it hits the bottom of the trap. Move the magnet carefully back and forth, until you feel the object attach to the magnet. Slowly retract the screwdriver.

Step 2: A Little Plumbing Work
Place a bucket under the pipe trap (the u-curve the pipe makes before it straightens out and heads straight down again) underneath the sink. Use the 8" slip join pliers to loosen the large nuts on either side of the trap. Once the nuts are loose, remove them by hand and pull the trap off the pipe, dumping it and its contents into the bucket. Your jewelry, along with a little water, should right out. Replace the trap and tighten the nuts, first by hand, then a final quarter revolution with the pliers. Do not over tighten the nuts.

Step 3: A Sigh of Relief
Now you can run the water. Check underneath the sink for leaks at the trap. Problem solved. And you did it yourself! Now, put that jewelry back on and don't leave it lying near the sink again!
