How to Install a Deadbolt Lock Recommended Skill Level:

Overview:

This project will show you how to install a deadbolt lock. Keep your home secure by installing a deadbolt lock on your entry doors.

Materials:

Deadbolt lock (internal or external mount), tape, pencil

Tools You'll Need:

power-lite cordless drill, 10ft. or 25ft. tape measure, slotted screwdriver, 7oz. or 16oz. hammer

Before You Begin:

Decide where to place the deadbolt. An internal deadbolt should be placed 6" to 12" above, or at least 6" below the lockset.

Barbara's Tips:

When drilling through the door, don't lock your drill in the ON position. You'll have more control if the bit should bind. Drilling a hole from each side reduces the chance of splintering or deforming your door when the drill bit exits.

Step 1: Position with a Template
The lock package should include a template. Tape it to the door following the manufacturer's instructions. Use a combination square to make sure the template is square with the door. Mark the location of the screw holes and the cylinder hole on the door.

Step 2: Drill…
Drill pilot holes for the screws and use a hole saw to drill the hole for the lock cylinder. Drill until the pilot bit comes through the door, and then finish the hole from the other side to keep the door from splintering. For a steel door, use a bimetal hole saw. For an internal deadbolt: Use a spade bit to drill the hole in the edge of the door for the bolt according to manufacturer's instructions. Close the door and trace the inside of the bolt hole onto the doorjamb for later reference.

Step 3: And Fill - external deadbolt only
Place the cylinder ring around the cylinder with the keyhole at the bottom. Insert the cylinder and connecting bar from the outside. Set the bolt in open position and attach the back plate to the inside of the door. Align the slot in the bolt case with the connecting bar and attach the bolt case to the inside of the door. Test the bolt from both sides of the door. Then, secure the strike in the bolt case. Close the door and trace the strike's outline onto the doorjamb. Chisel a mortise in the jamb for the strike. Secure the strike in the jamb and test the lock.

Step 4: And Fill - internal deadbolt only
Slide the latch bolt into the bolt hole and trace the outline of the latch plate on the edge of the door. Chisel a mortise fro the latch plate. Fit the bolt and latch plate back into place. Use screws to attach the latch plate and set the bolt in open position. Place the cylinder into the cylinder hole from the outside face of the door. Follow manufacturer's instructions for aligning cylinders and bolts. Drill a hole in the doorjamb for the bolt as per manufacturer's instructions for depth and diameter. Place a strike plate over the hole and trace the outline on the doorjamb. Chisel a mortise, set the strike plate and use screws to attach it to the doorjamb.

Step 5: Safe
Close the door and test your locks. You're safer and you did it yourself!
