Overview:
This project will show you how to install a motion detector. Increase your home security by installing a motion detector lighting system that will help deter unexpected visitors to your yard after dark. Simple to install just replace a working fixture with a prewired, preassembled detector this is an easy project with big rewards for your family's safety.
Materials: motion detector and light fixture, exterior light bulbs as indicated on motion detector packaging, caulk Tools You'll Need: 6-in-1 interchangeable screwdriver, 7oz. or 16oz. hammer Before You Begin: Turn off the power to the circuit at the main fuse or breaker box and remove the old fixture.
Barbara's Tips:
Use black electrical tape to block off the sensor's lens where unwanted motion or light is triggering the detector to come on. Any area (large or small) on the lens may be blocked without harming the motion detector.

Step 1: Check the Fit
Match screw holes on the fixture cover plate with junction box screw holes. Open knock-out screw holes by tapping them lightly with your hammer and screwdriver if needed. Seal any unnecessary open screw holes with caulk to prevent water from leaking in. Step 2: Connect the Wiring
Don't be nervous about working with electricity you remembered to shut off the power, right? So now it's just a matter of connecting wires. Thread the fixture wires through the cover plate and then connect to the supply wires. Match black wire to black wire white to white using the wire nuts provided with the motion detector kit. No ground wire is required, but if there is one, go ahead and attach it. Step 3: Finishing Up
Attach the motion detector and fixture to the junction box with the screws provided. Screw in the appropriate light bulbs, turn the power back on and wait until dark. Follow directions for setting the detector. Adjust the lamps on the fixture so they don't interfere with the motion detector (the bulbs should be at least 1/2" away from sensor). Now creep across your lawn to check your handiwork. Isn't it illuminating what you can do yourself!
