Barbara's Way Projects - How to Install a Surface Mounted Lock

Overview:

This project will show you how to install a surface mounted lock. For an added sense of security, without the added expense of a locksmith, a surface-mounted lock is a simple solution for a safer home.

Materials:

nails

Tools You'll Need:

power-lite cordless drill (and screwdriver) or 7oz. hammer, 6-in-1 interchangeable screwdriver, quick change utility knife

Barbara's Tips:

If you do not have the cordless drill, use a hammer and nail to make pilot holes. Choose a nail that is slightly smaller in diameter than the screw you will be using. Hammer the nail into your marked holes about half the depth of the screw length. Pull the nail straight out and and tighten the screw.

  Step 1: Get It Situated
Purchase the lock of your choice at your local home improvement center or hardware store. Position the lock on the door at the height you want and mark the holes with a pencil. Place the receiver of the chain or bolt on the doorframe trim and lightly trace the outer edges in pencil. Use your utility knife to cut away the door trim until you reach the doorjamb. Replace the lock piece and mark the screw hole with pencil.

Step 2: Lock It In Place
Use your drill and a bit that is slightly smaller than the mounting screw. Drill shallow holes at all the pencil marks. These are your pilot holes for the screws. Align the lock with the pilot holes and use your screwdriver to place and tighten all the screws (never overtighten and strip screws). You've added a level of safety to your home. And you did it yourself!
